Hi Gloria and everyone in the Schurman family,
I never met Bill but talked to him on the phone several times when he was the GM at the Amherst Stadium. Bill spearheaded a plan the town council approved to make ice time free for U-18 skaters. He said he was always puzzled why Public Libraries were free and ice time cost money.
The program was a great success for a community where many people had lost their jobs due to closures. The number of minor hockey players increased as did figure skating -- and Ringette came back. And best yet, the parents and grandparents started using the walking track at the Stadium and Bill was thrilled that the arena had become a centre of health, not just sports.
I wish I had met him, I really liked how he thought and wish more people would think like him. I was searching for him this morning and came across his obituary. I am very sad that he is gone.

Dear Gloria and family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on your great loss. I met Bill at a conference, several years ago in Halifax where I attended a talk he gave on community building. He had a tremendous amount of knowledge on the subject and spoke about it in a way that you just wanted to listen. When I found out he was a Schurman from Summerside, I cornered him after his talk and as you can imagine, we knew many people in common.I’m so sorry for his short life as he had so many skills and knowledge to share with people. This great man will be very much missed by many.
Sincerely, Charlene (Brenda’s sister)

From Wayde Perry and Family, we send our deepest condolences. Bill was always such a friend to Wayde, and I learned of his passing during a teary phone call from him. Not only a wonderful friend to our Wayde, but Bill was also a champion for public health and equity. Rare for a town (Amherst, in this case) to have such an advocate on staff. He will be missed by anyone lucky enough to know him.

I was shocked and saddened to read this news. I first met Billy when he was in grade seven in the classroom next door. He often visited me and was so respectful, courteous and friendly...traits that he always demonstrated to me over the years. He passed these on to his son whom I was extremely pleased to welcome later.I extend caring thoughts, sincere condolences and regards to you all. Billy has contributed so much and will surely be missed. Sincerely, Percy Mac Gougan

On behalf of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce, we send our deepest sympathies to Bill's family and friends. We are very sorry to hear this news and offer our greatest condolences - what a loss to PEI and the business community.
Bill was a great leader and could put a smile on everyone he met. We were lucky enough to have partnered with him just as recently as November for an event.
Rest in peace, Bill.

I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Bill's family at this time. As a Board member of Softball Canada and also as President of Softball Canada I had the opportunity to work numerous Softball events with Bill as well as David. Bill was a true hard worker who put the needs of Summerside and his community first. He was extremely well organized and ran some exceptional National and International Softball Championships in Summerside. At a time when the economy was struggling Bill found a way to run exceptional events and still make a profit. Bill was one of a kind and will be really missed in the Softball Community.

To Gloria, Tim, and all Bill’s family, we extend sincere sympathy on your great loss. We, of course, knew Bill from Summerside but actually got to see him quite often in Moncton when he was here with the Wildcats. He always managed to seek out Swabey and make sure he said hi and had a chat. That meant a lot to Swabey that a student from the past was so kind to him. God be with you as you cherish the good memories and celebrate his life and his contributions to the Maritimes.

ABOUT US
In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
