Obituary of Wedge, John Henry Richard 'Dick'
The death occurred peacefully at his late residence on Thursday, July 23, 2020 of John Henry Richard "Dick" Wedge of Summerside, P.E.I., aged 85 years. Dick was born in Summerside, P.E.I. to the late Henry and Marie (nee Delaney) Wedge and his stepmother Marie (nee Connick) Wedge. Beloved husband of Mary Alice (nee Doran) Wedge and loving father of Michelle (Frank) Strain, Sackville, NB, Richard (Maureen Rogers), Paul, Nicolle (Rick) Morrison, Brian (Paula) all of Summerside and Cindy (Evan Sullivan) Wedge-Sullivan, Belleville, ON. Also lovingly remembered by his 11 grandchildren Stephen Strain, Louisa (Leighan) Strain, Ben Wedge and Alix Wedge, David (Sara) Morrison, Michelle (Matt) Silliker, Marc Morrison, Marie (Dave McQuillan)Wedge, Michael (Britt) Wedge, Sarah (Chris) Ellis and Jennifer (Corey) Ross and 15 great-grandchildren. Survived by his sister Carol Wedge of Summerside.
Dick was the pharmacist/owner of the Enman Drug Co. Ltd for 35 years. He was a lifetime member and founder of the Summerside Yacht Club with a keen interest in the Learn to Sail program. He was also a long-term member of the Kinsmen Club, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and founder of the Northumberland Strait Yachting Association.
Dick was awarded Senior Islander of the Year award from the Province of PEI in 2014. His favourite sailing adventures were in the Northumberland Strait and his 13 year odyssey from PEI through the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, onward to Central America and back to Florida to begin the journey back to PEI via the Atlantic Seaboard.
In his final several years he became one of PEI's largest garlic farmers and developed new varieties for local cultivation, which will be available to avid garlic enthusiasts.
Resting at the East Prince Funeral Home, 245 Pope Rd., Summerside. Funeral service and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in Dick's memory to the Silver Fox SYC Learn to Sail Program or the Prince County Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Interment to take place in St. Paul's Church Cemetery, Summerside at a later date. ABOUT US
In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
