Obituary of Mary Jeanette Murphy

It is with great sadness that we, her 3 loving daughters, announce the peaceful passing at Prince County Hospital, of our mother Mary "Jeanette" Murphy (Johnston) of Summerside, on Monday, January 20th, age 88 years. Jeanette was born in Montreal on March 8th, 1936 to her late parents Sabinus and Mary (Greenan) Johnston and raised in Kinkora, P.E.I.

Loving and devoted mother to Lorelei (Kent) MacArthur, Summerside, Marla (John) Smallwood, Summerside and Bethany-Jayne Parsons (Joe), Torreon, Mexico. Very loving and proud “Nanny Coffee” to her 5 grandchildren Malone, Murphy and Jeana-Beth MacArthur and Marleigh-Jayne and Elly Smallwood. Jeanette will be deeply missed by her special cousin, whom she always thought of as her sister, Debbie Keough-Croken and her family, as well as her aunt Mildred (Greenan) Connelly of Ontario and numerous cousins. Along with her parents, Jeanette was predeceased by her brother Richard Johnston and the father of her children, Harold Murphy. Jeanette’s early adulthood was spent in Toronto where she worked in banking before settling back on P.E.I. When she had her children, she devoted her life to being a homemaker and always being “in the know” of what was happening in the lives of her daughters.

Her greatest joy was becoming a grandmother and she spent many days during their childhoods babysitting each one, creating memories and traditions that they will carry with them. “Nanny Coffee” was extremely proud of each grandchild, loved celebrating their milestones and would take any chance she could to brag about them. At this time, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all health-care professionals who cared for mom at her home (Home Care and Palliative Home Care) and at the PCH during her brief battle with cancer. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Mom is resting peacefully at the East Prince Funeral Home, Summerside, P.E.I. Visiting hours will be Thursday, January 23rd from 4-6 pm.  Funeral will be held at St. Malachy Catholic Church, Kinkora on Friday, January 24th at 3 pm. Internment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made direcltly to the Canadian Cancer Society or Prince County Hospital Foundation.
