Obituary of Richard Joseph Pettipas

The death occurred at the Prince County Hospital on January 6, 2025 of Richard Joseph Pettipas, of Slemon Park, aged 61 years. Richard was born in New Glasgow, N.S. to his late parents Alvin and Evelyn (Lipton) Pettipas.

Beloved husband of Victoria and loving father of Josh (Brittany), Ben, and Marissa. Survived by the following brothers and sisters: Marie Fraser (Allan-deceased), Arlene (Kendall) Higgins, Rosalie Hafey, David (Janet) Pettipas, Alma (Jim) Kyle, Rita (Sterling) MacDonald, Cathy Turnbull, John (Anne) Pettipas, Bernie (Jennifer) Pettipas, Gerry (Cindy) Pettipas and Mike Petitpas. Also survived by the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Jeannette (Mel) Head, Dorothy Hillier (Bill-deceased), Hugh (Sally) Riley, Beth (Jimmie) MacLean, and Joan Riley (Mike Cooley).

Will be missed by five grandchildren; his two dumplings Sophia and Ryleigh-Rae Chaisson, Abel Loewen-Pettipas, Brooklyn and Beckham Pettipas. Also missed by 40 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, his twin sister, Elizabeth Pettipas (infancy), mother-in-law, Mary Riley, brothers-in-law, Ian Riley, Allan Fraser, John Kyle, Bill Hillier, and nephew Greg Fraser.

Richard was deeply loved and highly respected, a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and in-law. As a dedicated teacher for over 30 years, he touched and nurtured countless lives. His contributions to the community were immense, serving as a decorated board member for multiple organizations and giving generously to the Island as a whole. Richard’s passion for sports was evident in his roles as a coach and a referee for soccer, hockey, and basketball.  A beloved umpire for softball, baseball, slow pitch, and fast pitch at both the provincial and national levels. Known as the life of the party, Richard’s vibrant personality shined through his many costumes—whether as an elf, leprechaun, or Easter bunny—bringing smiles to countless faces. His collection of colorful ties and socks was a fitting tribute to the joy and diversity he brought to life.

Truly one of a kind, Richard was cherished by many and will be deeply missed by all.

Resting at the East Prince Funeral Home, 245 Pope Rd., Summerside until Saturday, February 1st, 2025 where a funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. Donations in Richard’s memory may be made directly to sledge hockey Parasport and Recreation PEI. or Parkside Elementry School for new playground by e-transfer at parksidehomeandschool@gmail.com  Visiting hours on Friday, January 31st, 2025 from 2 -4  p.m. and 7 -9 p.m.
