Visiting Hours: Monday, November 4 at 1:00 p.m.
Funeral: Monday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. at East Prince Funeral Home Chapel
George passed away peacefully on November 1, aged 92, surrounded by family caring for him at home with support of Summerside Home Care. He is now with his beloved wife of 70 years, Marion, who he has missed so dearly this past year.
George was born in Summerside to his parents, the late Margaret (Acorn) and Clifford Smith.
George will be lovingly remembered by his children Beverley Gaudet (Summerside), Karen (Gary) Noonan (Summerside), Derek (Arlene) Smith (Charlottetown), Jamie (Joanne) Smith (Summerside), and daughter-in-law, Deb Smith (Calgary). George is also survived by sisters Eleanor Grady and Kathy Montgomery, and sister-in-law Terri Smith. Also left to mourn Grampy are his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his wife Marion; son, George Smith (Calgary); and son-in-law Charlie Gaudet. George was predeceased by brothers and sisters and their spouses: Margie and Stu Grady, Joanne and Don Wright, Gerald Smith, Bill Smith, Shirley and Murray Hurlburt; and by brothers-and sisters-in-law: Bennie Grady, George Montgomery, Warren and Marie Delaney, Ruby and Duncan Murray, Jean and Hammond Bowness, and Gladys and Colin Campkin.
George’s love and respect for all things Air Force grew during his almost 50 years at CFB Summerside as the Officers’ Mess Manager. When the Base closed, he worked at the bar at the Silver Fox for another 10 years. George and Marion loved to travel, visiting favorite warm vacation destinations and family. He created many needlepoint projects over the years that will be left for family to treasure. He loved the show M.A.S.H., which he watched over and over until the end since it appeared on TV in 1972.
George was a strong and stoic person and bore his recent health issues with humor and grace. We are so grateful to Home Care and Occupational Therapy who made “Home Care Days” something he looked forward to, They cared for him like he was their family. The family also thanks Dr. Coetzee and Harbourside Medical Centre for their care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to a charity of your choice or the Summerside Baptist Church or Cat Action Team of PEI in memory of the feral Silver Fox cats that Marion and George fed faithfully every day for years--rain, shine or snow.
ABOUT US
In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
