Obituary of Olive Moore

Mary “Olive” Moore

Olive Moore of Summerside, PEI passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Prince County Hospital.

Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, NS, Olive was the daughter of the late William and Olive (Burns) Poirier. Although Olive left Cape Breton in 1954, her heart always remained there. She became excited every time she saw the “Welcome to Cape Breton” sign posted above the Canso Causeway.

She is survived by her children, Gery, Karen (Randy) Waugh, Denise and Alison (Joe Mundy). Olive is also survived by three grandchildren, Olivia (Corey) Stairs, Caitlin Waugh (Cody Doak) and Matthew Johnson. Olive was blessed with two great grandchildren, Sophie Stairs and Rylee Doak, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Olive was predeceased by her former husband, Alfred Moore and son, Kenneth Moore. She was the last surviving member of the Poirier family having also been predeceased by her sisters Eva (John Edward) MacMullin, Mary Lou Dupe, Emily (Art) Dewan and Frances (Joe) Paulus.

Olive’s deep faith brought her strength and comfort and were instrumental to overcoming challenges faced during her life. Olive trusted in the goodness of God and had great faith in the power of prayer. She also had a great devotion to Our Lady. Mary’s example of faith and trust guided Olive through her life and in times of need, she prayed for her intercession.

Olive saw her children as one of the greatest blessings in her life. She loved them unconditionally. No sacrifice for her family was too big or too small. Her family, through her love and support, experienced firsthand, what it meant to have a devoted mother. Olive was so excited to become a grandmother and what a special grandmother she was. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought joy and happiness to her days.

Olive enjoyed working for twenty years as a Resident Care Worker at the former Summerset Manor and Wedgewood. Olive was very social and thrived on her interactions with others. She will be remembered for her great sense of humour and her enjoyment of a good laugh. We often saw a twinkle in her eye and a mischievous grin on her face. She valued her friendships and enjoyed many good cups of tea with her friends especially when tea was served with sweets, anything sweet. She looked forward to her nightly visits to see her McDonald’s community of friends.

She cared about the needs of others and reached out to help as she could whether it be with a smile, a wave or baking cookies every month for a year for children who had lost their mother … this is the woman we loved and will miss.
