Thane MacEwen Obituary
Peacefully and surrounded by family, Leland Thane (Thane/Thanie) MacEwen passed away the evening of Tuesday, May 5th, 2026, in his 66th year.
Thane was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 9th, 1960, to Lillian Faye (nee Ellis) and Arthur MacEwen Jr. He went to live with his grandparents, Leila and Leland Ellis, and his uncle Myles, in St. Gilbert, PEI at the age of 2, after the passing of his mother. In his 13th year, he went to live with his Uncle Lynden and Aunt Betty Ellis in Northam, PEI. After graduating high school, he met the love of his life, Darlene (nee Gallant) and they were married on October 11th, 1979. Thane worked at a variety of jobs early in his life until he went to work for Amalgamated Dairies Limited and thus began the career which defined him for over 30 years. Thane was proud of his accomplishments at ADL, and any host who did not serve ADL products to him was subject to being chastised. His years as a leader of the Summerside business community included a stint as President of the Summerside Chamber of Commerce. He retired in May, 2025.
While Thane was very proud of his work accomplishments, nothing meant more to him than family. Thane and Darlene raised their two sons, Colin and Ryan, in a cheerful and happy home, and they were renowned for their hosting of friends and family. Their Halloween parties were legendary, as was Thane’s sharp wit and sense of humour. Thane was always an avid sports enthusiast, playing softball and hockey in his youth. His years with the Mooseheads, Drug Mart, and Alpines were fondly remembered. He also enjoyed few things more than a day of golfing with family and friends. His antics on the golf course will be remembered by many.
Thane is lovingly remembered by his wife Darlene, his sons Colin and Ryan, and his four grandchildren Dameon, Nevaeh, Tyson, and Mila. He is also survived by his sister Gail Howard, brothers-in-law Al (Khris) Gallant and Ron (Patti) Gallant. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Cindy Druet, daughter-in-law Heather, brothers-in-law Joe and Edmond and sisters-in-law Carolann and Judy.
Thane's family would like to thank the staff of the Prince County Hospital who took such professional and compassionate care of him in his last weeks.
In accordance with Thanie’s wishes, there will be no visitation. The service will be held at the East Prince Funeral Home and Chapel at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Summerside Legion at 4:00 pm. All are welcome.
Donations in Thane's memory can be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to a charity of one’s choice.
