Reg Hamill Obituary

With deep sorrow and appreciation for a life well lived, we announce the sudden passing of John ‘Reginald’ Hamill of Seven Mile Bay on April 9, 2026. Reg was the beloved husband of 58 years to Helena (Sherry). Proud and loving father of Shane (Sue Ellen), Bethany (Sean MacDonald), Ellen (Gerry Lawless) and Christine (Darren Slemko). Cherished grandfather to Madeline, Blake and Lydia Hamill; Callie and Megan MacDonald; and Hannah, Eve and Seth Lawless. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Hamill (Raymond deceased) and his sister-in-law Frances McCourt (Louis deceased).

Reg was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Agnes Hamill; his sister, Lorraine Williams (Fred); his brother, George Hamill; and his parents-in-law, Basil and Mary Sherry. In the summer of 1962, Reg started working for CN Marine as a waiter. After graduating from Kinkora Regional High School in 1963, he went on to a 35-year career with CN Marine, progressing through positions including waiter, deckhand, vehicle checker, ticket seller, and quartermaster. In November 1970, he enrolled in marine school at Holland College. He obtained a second officer certificate in 1971; first officer certificate in 1973; and captain certificate in 1975. Over the next 22 years, he worked as a Captain including his final eight years as Senior Captain, retiring with the opening of the Confederation Bridge in 1997. Reg’s final crossing was a memorable one, serving as captain of the M.V. Holiday Island on its last voyage from Borden, PEI, to Cape Tormentine, NB.

Reg loved family gatherings, travelling, hockey, softball, and golf, and was a long-time member of the Crapaud Curling Club. Together, he and Helena travelled far and wide, proudly cheering on their grandchildren in hockey, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Reg had a deep love and appreciation for the land and took great pride in seeing the family farm continue through the generations. He worked alongside his father, Walter, on their mixed farm until his retirement from Marine Atlantic. His strong work ethic never wavered, and in later years he farmed side-by-side with his son, Shane, and grandson, Blake, continuing to do so until his passing.

Reggie was an outgoing, friendly man who loved to stop and chat and get to know people wherever he went. He was known as a loyal friend and a good neighbour, always greeting others with a warm hello and an easy smile. Reg was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Church, Seven Mile Bay, and his faith remained an important part of his life. He also dedicated many years to serving on numerous parish committees.

Arrangements have been entrusted to East Prince Funeral Home, 245 Pope Rd., Summerside, with visitation on Monday, April 13 from 4–7 pm. Funeral mass on Tuesday, April 14 at 10:30 am, St. Peter’s Church, Seven Mile Bay. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in his memory may be made to the Prince County Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered every day.
