It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anna Marie (Winstanley) McAulay at Prince County Hospital, on December 10, 2025, aged 90 years. A proud Cape Bretoner whose kindness, strength and unwavering love left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.
Born on October 21,1935 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Anna was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Winstanley, and wife of the late Gussie McAulay. Loving mother of Willie (Susan) McAulay, Wayne (Wilma) McAulay, the late Johnny McAulay of Glace Bay, and Brenda (Ron MacTavish), Jerry (Robyn) McAulay, P.E.I. Also leaving behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sister of Johnny (Susan)Weyman, sister-in-law of Leo Frazer, predeceased by sisters and brothers Camilla, Geraldine (Murray) McPhee, Marg (Mike) MacGillvary, Wayne Winstanley, Betty (Tony) Pastuck. Survived also by numerous nieces and nephews.
Growing up as the daughter of a hardworking coal miner, she had a deep appreciation for resilience, community, and the value of honest work. Marrying and staying in Glace Bay to raise her family, she then, in 2015 moved to Prince Edward Island to live with her daughter and family.
A devoted mother and caregiver by nature, Anna spent her life tending to others. Her greatest joy came from nurturing, guiding and cheering on her children. Whether caring for family, friends or those she met she offered comfort with a quiet grace that made people feel safe and loved.
Music was woven into the fabric of her life, and she found joy in the simple pleasure of a good tune -whether it was the Cape Breton fiddle at the Savoy Theatre, songs from her youth, or anything that could get your toes tapping. Music brought her comfort, connection and countless cherished memories with those she loved. Anna was also an avid reader and loved her word search puzzles.
Anna could find a story in the smallest moment- a chance encounter, or a long forgotten memory-and turned it into something worth sharing. She believed that stories were a way of keeping people connected. Her tales-sometimes wise, sometimes mischievous, and always full of heart - left their mark on everyone who had the pleasure of hearing them.
Above all else she adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the light of her life, and she embraced every moment with them - big or small - with joy and gratitude. She took pride in watching them grow, sharing her treats with them, and leaves them with a legacy of love that will guide them forever.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who were blessed to know her. Her kindness, her strong Cape Breton spirit, and her boundless love will never be forgotten.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, where those who loved her can gather to share memories and honor her life.
