Joan M Wooder Obituary

Wooder, Joan M.  (May 27, 1934 to August 26, 2025)

The family of Joan M. Wooder (Keddy) is saddened to announce her passing on August 26, 2025 at Andrews of Summerside at the age of 91 years.  Joan was predeceased in May 2020 by Frank, her beloved husband of 67 years.  She is survived by her three children Anne (Jeff MacLeod), Jim (Tanya Andrews) and Kim (John MacCuspie) as well as her three much loved grandchildren, Emily Wooder MacLeod (Craig Langille), Connor MacCuspie and Chapin MacCuspie.  Joan also leaves behind her devoted longtime caregiver and friend, Christine Gallant, to whom the family owes a huge debt of gratitude; Joan’s loving niece and nephew-in-law, Sandra and Fraser Caunt; and nephew and grandniece Phillip Keddy and Shauna Keddy whose friendship was welcomed by Joan later in her life.

Joan’s life was devoted to, and shaped by, her three priorities:  family, friends and her faith.  She was a woman of remarkable selflessness and generosity, strength and determination.  Her resilience was amply demonstrated as a military wife who created loving homes for her family and a bedrock of support for her husband over the course of his military career and the various postings that accompanied it.  In addition, she established a career as a respected legal assistant in each community in which she lived.

Joan was a lifelong adherent of the Anglican church and a woman of great and abiding faith.  Regardless of where she and Frank lived, Joan joined the congregation of the nearest Anglican church and devoted countless hours to the support of the church and the church community.  For more than 40 years before her death, Joan tirelessly supported the Anglican Parish of St. Mary and St. John and its work.  Joan, along with the other members of the “posse” (notably Marj Loggie, Fran MacLean and Betty Colborne) were famous for their successful fundraising prowess over the years:  lobster suppers, yard sales and fashion shows to name a few.  After church, Joan and the others would be found in the church hall serving coffee hour after having had supplied all of the food and baked goods.  Joan was a mainstay of the church choir, contributing her beautiful soprano voice to all of the hymns that she knew so well.  Cleaning and decorating the church for seasonal and special events was also one of Joan’s areas of expertise.  Over the years, she served on various church committees and groups and for several years was authorized to give communion to members of the congregation who were unable to attend church.  Joan’s legacy of church and community service will always be particularly cherished by her family.

Among her many accomplishments, Joan was proudest of her three children and her grandchildren.   For them, she was a bastion of love, support, generosity and unselfish devotion.  Her home was always the “go to” place and a welcoming destination for a host of her children’s friends.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Andrews of Summerside for the excellent and compassionate care they provided to Joan for the three years of her residence there.
