Obituary of Richard Broderick
We celebrate the life of Richard Broderick. Rick passed away on February 23, 2025, one day before his 86th birthday.
A man who was 96 percent blind from the age of 13, Rick never let that stop him from living life to the fullest. A life that place family at the top but included many hobbies and interests; he was never idle.
While in Alberta with his wife and three sons, they were living the prairie life when unexpectedly, twins were on their way. This prompted a return to school for a university degree in computer programming and a new profession with the RCMP. Most amazingly, he walked 45 minutes to work every day, in the middle of Ottawa, with extremely limited eyesight. This dedication to his family was evident throughout his life.
There were so many examples of Rick disregarding his limited vision, including, rebuilding their cottage, driving his bass boat and snowmobile throughout the land of lakes, running marathons, and being the best barbecue chef on Rainbow Crescent.
Rick's successes were numerous; especially in athletics, setting national records in swimming and track and field and competing for Team Canada in goalball and broomball. He also coached provincial and national track and field athletes and this took him around the world.
Rick's love and affinity for music was evident in the house for all to hear. As a member of multiple bands and having an opportunity with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Orchestra, he could be heard practicing the trumpet, harmonica, maracas, among other musical instruments.
A man of many passions and hobbies, he never did anything halfway. He collected stamps and bred tropical fish but his knowledge of wine and his love of gardening were lifelong activities.
Dad, we appreciate your unwavering dedication to your family, to providing and being there in every way for each of us. As you celebrate your first heavenly birthday, take a walk with our mom Shirley, the love of your life. We will all miss you so much.
Lovingly remembered and forever missed by Rob (Norine), Dan (Tammy), Daryl (April), Mike (Sarah) and Michelle (Erik).
To honor Rick's wishes, there will be no visiting hours or service, In lieu of flowers, donations to the Prince County Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
ABOUT US
In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
