Obituary of Newson, Elmer Bruce

Elmer Bruce Newson passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 9, 2021. Elmer treasured his life on and by the water . He was a long-time member of the Summerside Yacht Club and enjoyed his many sailing adventures over the years. Elmer Newson along with his good friend Richard "Dick' Wedge started a sailing program in 1963. Elmer took pleasure in sharing his passion of water with his family and friends. In 1981 Elmer was awarded the Meritorious Service by the Navy League PEI for his 15 years of service as a Lieutenant. Elmer enjoyed community volunteering and was a long-time member of the Summerside Kinsmen Club. He is a 32 degree Mason and a member of The Red Oak Shrine Club and was their treasurer for a number of years. He was very proud representing the Shriners in the local parades driving his tiny car with Elmo by his side to the delight of all the children on the parade route. Elmer was predeceased by his parents, Elmer J. Newson & Helen (Thompson) Newson, as well as stepson Stephen Durieux. Beloved husband to Audrey (nee Woodside) and loving father to Karen (Philippe) Outerleys, Debbie (Dave) Schurman, stepchildren Debbie (Lorne) Geary, Wendy (Brian) Giesbrecht and Darlene (John) Bissonette. Elmer is brother to Wayne (Judith) Newson and sister Kathleen "Kay" (Russell) Rogers. He will always be loving and proudly remembered by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Elmer is resting at East Prince Funeral Home, a private family Masonic Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 19, 2021 at 1pm. Interment in the Peoples Cemetery will follow.
